A marketplace or your own shop?

October 31, 2026 · 2 min

Two paths, two different jobs

A business that decides to sell online usually faces two paths: opening a store on a large marketplace, or building its own e-commerce site. Both can work, but they do not do the same job.

What a marketplace gives and takes

A marketplace's biggest advantage is ready-made traffic. People looking for your product are already there, and payments and often shipping come built in. Getting started is quick.

In return you pay a commission on each sale and play by the marketplace's rules. Your price sits next to your competitors' on the same page. Then there is the customer relationship: marketplaces often do not share the buyer's contact details with the seller. The sale is yours, but the customer largely belongs to the marketplace.

What your own shop gives and asks for

On your own site, the customer data stays with you. You can reach the same customer again and set the rules and the look yourself. There is no marketplace commission on each sale either.

The price is that you have to bring the visitors yourself. Nobody wanders into a shop no one knows about. Payments, shipping and stock management are also your responsibility.

Questions to ask before deciding

  • Is your customer looking for the product, or for you? Someone looking for the product buys more easily on a marketplace; someone looking for you, on your own site.
  • What is left after commission? Working out your profit per item after commission and shipping often tells you on its own whether a marketplace suits you.
  • Who will track stock? Selling on two channels at once means managing stock from one place, so the same item is not sold twice.
  • How much does the customer relationship matter? For products people buy again, owning the customer data changes more.

For many businesses the answer is not one or the other but both together.

How we handle it

Our e-commerce work runs from setting up the shop to connecting payments and shipping, and from product and stock management to marketplace integrations. Where your sales come from shows which path suits you.

We do not promise sales figures. The domain, the shop's accounts and the customer data are all in your name, which is what lets us work with you remotely from Turkey without you depending on us.
