What does an unanswered review say?

October 13, 2026 · 2 min

Your reply is read along with the review

Before choosing a business on Google, most of us read the reviews. We do not only look at the stars; we also notice whether the business replies.

An unanswered negative review can make a reader think "if something goes wrong here, nobody will deal with it". A calm, short reply under the same review often says more than the review itself.

The four parts of a good reply

The structure that works for a negative review is simple:

  1. Thanks. For taking the time to write.
  2. Acknowledgement. Of what they experienced, without dismissing it or getting defensive.
  3. A private channel. Moving the conversation to the phone or messages instead of arguing under the review.
  4. Brevity. Three or four sentences are enough. A long reply reads as defensive.

The reply below is an example; it does not belong to a real business:

"Thank you for your review. You should not have been kept waiting at your appointment time. We would like to hear what happened from you directly; you can reach us by phone or message."

The reply should never include the customer's personal details, the specifics of the service they received, or any health information. For clinics and healthcare businesses this line matters in particular.

If the review is unfair

Sometimes a review really is unfair, or comes from someone who was never a customer. Google offers an option to report it; the decision is Google's own. Until the report is resolved, a calm reply is still the right step for the other customers reading.

You can check your own profile

Open your business on Google Maps and look at the last ten reviews. How many have a reply from you? How old is the oldest unanswered one?

How we handle it

Review management is part of our SEO and GEO work. We follow new reviews and write replies in your business's own tone. When a sensitive review comes in, we talk it through with you before any reply goes live.

We do not promise that replying will change your position in search results. What it changes is what the reader thinks of you.
